Glossary
Auto-Belay Machines
Auto-belay machines are mechanisms to which you can attach yourself for route-climbing. They will catch you and lower you to the ground in a slow and gentle manner. It’s a bit scary the first time but it’s really safe. Our auto-belay machines have a weight limit of 30-330lbs. If you are under 14, you MUST be attached by an adult.
Climbing Harness
A special harness that you wear around your waist and your legs. Our staff shows you how to put it on and use it. Only harnesses that are CE certified are allowed at our facilities. We have harnesses for every body from toddler to waist circumference of 56inches {I will double check that!!!} as well as a maternity harness.
Bouldering
Bouldering is climbing without a rope only up to a relatively safe height. In Bouldering a climb is called a “problem”. Think of a bouldering problem as a puzzle that you have to solve with your body and your brain. All you need for bouldering is a pair of shoes and some chalk (available at Climb Base5).
Grading-System
We use two different grading systems at Climb Base5. One for bouldering and one for routes. General idea is the higher the number the harder the climb gets. Grading systems are subjective and are very dependent on how the climb suits the person grading it. If you are new to climbing, just jump on everything that looks fun.
Route Climbing
Routes are too high to be climbed without a rope. That means, you either need someone who knows how to belay you, or you use the auto-belay machines. For that you need a harness. A route is typically graded according to the hardest move on it or how tiring it is to climb it.
Shoes
Climbing shoes are designed for keeping your foot on the wall even on the tiniest little holds. The rubber around the toes is usually quite sticky to give you extra friction. Because of the use of a climbing shoe it must be quite snug around your foot. We generally go with almost uncomfortably tight but not painful. In the beginning, definitely choose comfort over
performance.
