Defying Gravity 2023 – Team Bouldering Competition

Based on the overwhelming interest, support and fun people had with the last three Defying Gravity bouldering competitions, we’re bringing it back again for its fifth year. There’s going to be more challenges and games that’ll make this “not-your-average” and the most unique climbing comp of the year in Metro Vancouver!

This event is not about being the strongest climber. It’s about teamwork. It’s going to make you laugh. It’s going to make you think outside the box while experiencing climbing in a completely different way. It’s going to be a wicked time for everyone in a fun, relaxed and supportive environment.

If you’ve never climbed in a comp situation and want to give it a try, this is for you. If you’ve had some comp experience, this will be something that you’ve never seen before where you’ll have to trust your instincts, close your eyes, leap and hope you picked the right teammate. Experience climbing as a team sport.

Register as a team or sign up on your own (we’ll put you on a team) and face off against other teams with over 30 new boulder problems to try and our spicy-constructed team challenges…

The Rules

• Climb as a team
  • Come up with your own three-person team.
  • You can also sign up as an individual and we’ll organize you to be on a team. Just email ally@climbbase5.com with your first and last name, gender and category (see below).
  • Ages 8 and up are welcome to join!
• Earn points as a team by climbing boulder problems and taking part in our unique style of team challenges.
  • The most points for all rounds gets your team to the finals! We’ll have a finals for the top 5 teams from all three team categories (Novice V0-V2, Advanced V3-V5, and Expert V6+).
  • Win the finals? Get the glory and the bragging rights, and most importantly, get your team name added to our Defying Gravity trophy!

Event Program – spectators welcome

8am – 4:45pm: We’ll have a 2hr 45min scramble format with the focus on the hardest and most boulders topped, mixed with our spicy team-constructed challengs that earn you the most points.

• Heat 1 8:00am-10:45am  – Novice scramble *teams can be co-ed, or all the same
  • registration opens – 7:00am, closes 7:50am
  • technical meeting 7:50am

• Heat 2 11:00am-2:30pm – Advanced scramble *teams can be co-ed, or all the same
  • registration opens – 10:00am, closes 10:50am
  • technical meeting 10:50am

• Heat 3 2:45pm-5:30pm – Expert scramble *co-ed teams mandatory
  • registration opens – 1:45pm, closes 2:35pm
  • technical meeting 2:35pm

7:30pm – 9:30pm: Finals, hot dogs, beer, fun, games, awards, swag giveaways and general hilarity to follow!
